The HO-scale model layout that we will be exhibiting in our new Model Railroad Building covers several aspects of Maine, US and Global History. The layout is modelled after the Maine Central Railroad and the communities through which the railroad operated. The hey day of the Maine Central Railroad was pre-WW1 (1917), but the layout’s buildings, homes and other structures are primarily modelled after Maine’s buildings and infrastructure from 1940-1960. Seashore volunteers will be adding new sections to the layout that will feature trolley lines in communities the Maine Central Railroad operated, which will extend the layout’s history to cover a timeline of roughly 1900-1960.
The variety of topics covered within the model layout itself gives us so many directions to take the new building’s supporting displays and interactive activities we could choose to offer. We need your help narrowing down these topics.
When we create these new displays, our goal is drive home The “Why” and not the “How” or the “What.” Why is the history we’re telling important, and why are we telling it?
Please weigh in by sharing what topics would be most interesting to you or your family below. If you have any other thoughts about topics we haven’t mentioned, please be encouraged to share them in the comment box.
Survey results will help us create a mission for our new building and model exhibit overall, as well as to set goals for what we hope all visitors will experience during their visit.
Thank you so much for your help!
