Now Hiring: Buildings & Grounds Coordinator

 

Seashore Trolley Museum seeks a self-motivated and reliable individual with repairperson, custodial, and lawn mowing/landscaping experience to serve as our Buildings & Grounds Coordinator; a part-time, seasonal position. The salary for this 32 hour/week position is offered at $23/hour. The position’s start date can be flexible but could start as soon as Monday, April 7th and as late as Monday, April 28th. The position’s end date is Friday, October 24, 2025. The ideal candidate will be able to work M-F, but we can accommodate a different schedule for the right candidate.

The position has the overall responsibility to help maintain our grounds, with occasional maintenance help needed in our buildings. This position works closely with the Director of Museum Operations, Executive Director, volunteers and seasonal contractors. The ideal candidate will have great physical endurance to cover a large space, a keen eye for detail, and diligence a strong work ethic.

Position duties include:

Grounds: Maintaining landscape and garden areas by planting grass, mowing, weed whacking, trimming trees and bushes, fertilizing flowers and other plants, and preventing and eliminating weeds. Keeping grounds free from trash, litter and debris. Using hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes. Safeguarding walkways are clear and signage and fence posts are up-right. Painting or touching up existing paint on posts, picnic tables, benches, steps, stepstools, and signage. Winterizing campus grounds and buildings. Bringing inside all seasonal signage and items. Placing plow stakes.

Buildings: Performing maintenance and minor repairs (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks etc.) and reporting major damages. Ensuring our buildings and carbarns are guest-ready by sweeping, blowing leaves, emptying trash receptacles, cleaning entrances, wiping windows, dusting displays, etc. Cleaning the public bathrooms in the Visitors Center and Model Railroad Building twice per week, (typically Tuesday and Friday).

Repair: Performing typical repairperson duties, including facilities and tool repairs and maintenance.

Safety: Maintaining safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintaining Museum equipment.

Work Vehicle Operation & Maintenance: Operating and basic maintenance of our work truck (Ford F150), lawn mowers, and power tools.

Museum Events: Undertaking occasional custodial and janitorial tasks, lifting heavy items, moving chairs, setting up tables and pop up tents, putting items away after the events, etc.

Volunteer Relationship Building: Working alongside volunteers assisting with facilities maintenance and grounds work. Cultivating and steward volunteer relationships. Taking a lead role on our large volunteer days to ensure teams have the proper tools, supplies and safety equipment.

Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director, Director of Museum Operations or other staff.

  • Familiarity with landscaping and repairperson practices.
  • Proficient in using manual and power tools safely.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Self-motivated with an ability to problem solve.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and pride in a job well done.
  • Ability to follow instructions, requires minimal oversight.
  • Physically agile and dexterous.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends if needed.
  • Ability to interact with our guests in a way that enhances their experience at the museum.
  • Strong time management skills, and the ability to plan your own work.

New England Electric Railway Historical Society’s Seashore Trolley Museum, located in Kennebunkport, Maine, pioneered the field of volunteer-sponsored rail preservation worldwide when it was founded in 1939.
