Sensory Friendly Day 4PM-6PM

September 17, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

To purchase tickets in advance visit: https://sensoryfriendlytrolley.eventbrite.com

Seashore Trolley Museum, located in beautiful Kennebunkport, ME, is the world’s first and largest electric railway museum! Take a ride on our heritage railway on board restored trolleys from the early 1900s. Explore our outdoor campus, three trolley carhouses, our restoration shop, and many other collections and displays before and/or after your scheduled ride.

Many of our members and guests share that someone in their group or family has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. This season, we are trying out Sensory Friendly Admission hours to provide an even better experience for children and adults with sensory challenges.

(If you are looking for our General Admission or Special Event tickets, please visit https://trolleymuseum.eventbrite.com)

Here’s what we will be doing differently during Sensory Friendly Admission hours to provide a better sensory experience for those diagnosed with ASD:

• We will limit tickets sales and the amount of families present during these special hours. Sensory Friendly Admission hours are taking place on Tuesdays (we’re closed to the general public) and Saturdays (we are staying open later for this event).

• Our trolley crew will be asked to turn down radios and approach each family to make announcements while on the platform instead of using our PA system.

• Dispatchers will ask guests before they board if they would appreciate a quiet, whistle-less ride with a short stop at Talbott Park (the half-way point of the ride), or a ride with regular trolley noise levels and a longer stop at Talbott Park. We will board passengers on trolleys accordingly, spaced apart from other families.

• Before the trolley departs and families board, the crew will talk about the noises that will be heard on the ride (air compressor, rail squeaking around curves, bells, etc.) and what parts of the trolley they come from.

• Crew will be sit adjacent to (but not on top of) guests with sensory issues who engage with them on the ride.

• Some guests with sensory issues may struggle with sitting in one place for long. At Talbott Park, we will give guests the opportunity to stand up and stretch and walk around the trolley while it’s parked.

If there are any other steps we can take to make you and your group more comfortable during your sensory friendly experience, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

Sensory Friendly Dates/Times during our 2022 Season will be:

Tuesday, June 14th 1PM-3PM

Saturday, June 18th 4PM-6PM

Tuesday, July 5th 10AM-12PM

Saturday, July 16th 4PM-6PM

Saturday, August 14th 4PM-6PM

Saturday, September 10th 4PM-6PM

Saturday, September 18th 4PM-6PM

Saturday, October 22nd 4PM-6PM

When our trolleys were built and originally operated in the early 1900s, consideration was not given to travelers with mobility challenges. All trolleys have steps into the trolley, and some have additional interior steps. However, in 2020 Seashore purchased an adapted Mobilift to help our guests with mobility issues access some of the trolleys in our collection. Two of these trolleys will be operating this season: Wheeling, WV 639 and Boston Elevated 5821. If you or a member of your group would like to use the Mobilift to access the trolleys operating on our railroad, please call in advance to let us know (207-967-2800 x113) so we can have the trolley and Mobilift ready for you upon your arrival.

Our 2022 season COVID-19 policies will be posted on April 18th. Review our COVID-19 policies at https://trolleymuseum.org/learn/bylaws-policies/covid-19-policies

By purchasing tickets to visit the museum, you and all guests in your group accept and agree to adhere to our COVID-19 policies as written, and understand your risk visiting any businesses during this pandemic, including the Seashore Trolley Museum.
